The Legendary Poe: A mysterious death

Edgar Allan Poe was, indeed, one of the greatest writer of the Gothic Genre from all times. His tales of the mystery and the macabre, condensed into short stories full of mysteries and suspense, plunge his readers in a dreadful and terrifying world. One full of fears, paranoia, and hidden monsters. Edgar Allan Poe paints his settings with such acute talent and sharp manners that he leaves his reader with awe and wonder as one unfolds his stories.

It is nonetheless crucial to mention that Edgar Allan Poe experienced a life full of trials and challenges. He was fully tested with ups and downs. Orphan he was at three years old and economically deprived he has been during his years of prodigy at school. Eventually, towards the final stage of his life, Edgar fell into a severe depression. During his latter years of psyche destruction, one could say that his inspiration for his written tales reached its peak.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Massachusetts, Boston, on January 19 1809. His parents died before he turned three years old. He was sent to Virginia where John and Frances Allan raised hi. John Allan, whose tobacco exportation business flourished, decided to send the writer to the University of Virginia. Edgar succeeded with flamboyant success. However, he was greatly in debt due to his gambling habits. He thus quit the university and went to Richmond.

In 1827, Edgar Allan Poe was enlisted in the United States Army. Following years of service, he was admitted to the United States Military Academy. Due to his lack of financial material, he was once again constrained to leave the Academy.

In 1836, he married his thirteen years old cousin Virginia and started editing a number of literary journals. Establishing himself as a short story writer, he then published his now best-sellers stories such as “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven”. After Viriginia’s death from tuberculosis, Edgar’s state of depression worsened.

His life ended tragically on October 3, 1849, when he was found semi-conscious. He was officially declared dead four days later, due to a “congestion of the brain”. Yet the cause of his death is still a subject that torments many people today.
